Solidarity with the People of Azerbaijan and the Question of Turkmenistan’s Air Defense Readiness

On March 5, during daytime hours, unmanned aerial vehicles reportedly launched from the territory of Iran attacked facilities in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan. According to official information, one of the drones fell on the terminal building of Nakhchivan International Airport. Another drone landed near a school building in the village of Shakirabad. As a result of the attack, the airport terminal was damaged and two civilians were injured. The Human Rights Platform of the Civic Movement “DAYANÇ” / Turkmenistan expresses its solidarity with the people of Azerbaijan and wishes a speedy recovery to those who were injured. Attacks on civilian infrastructure and threats against peaceful residents are unacceptable and contradict the principles of international law. This incident once again demonstrates how dangerous modern warfare has become. Unmanned aerial vehicles are capable of crossing state borders within minutes. Drones do not recognize borders. They do not take diplomatic statements into account. And they do not respect the status of neutrality. In this context, an important question arises for Turkmenistan. Our country shares a border with Iran and is located in a region of increasing geopolitical tension. How prepared is Turkmenistan’s air defense system to respond to such threats? Is there an effective system for detecting and intercepting unmanned aerial vehicles? Is the airspace along the southern border being constantly monitored? Is there a clear action plan to protect civilian infrastructure and the population? The safety of citizens is one of the fundamental responsibilities of any state. In conditions of growing regional instability, the authorities must ensure the readiness of security services, maintain transparency, and provide timely information to the population about potential risks. The Human Rights Platform of the Civic Movement “DAYANÇ” / Turkmenistan emphasizes: State neutrality is not protection against modern threats. Real protection can only come through preparedness, responsibility, and an effective security system.
