Rising Food Prices in Turkmenistan: What Measures Is the Government Taking?

The Human Rights Platform of the Civic Movement “DAYANÇ” / Turkmenistan expresses serious concern regarding the sharp rise in food prices reported in various regions of the country over the past few days. According to reports from independent sources, the prices of several basic food products in private shops have nearly doubled. For example, the price of potatoes has increased from 7–8 to 16–17 manats per kilogram, tomatoes from 10–12 to 20 manats, brynza cheese from 35 to 45 manats, and apples from 12–13 to 17–19 manats. Cigarettes have also become significantly more expensive: if previously a pack cost around 30 manats, prices now range from 45 to 60 manats depending on the brand. Available information also indicates a smaller but noticeable increase in prices in state stores, where some goods have risen by approximately 2–4 manats. Particular concern arises from the fact that imports from neighboring Iran play an important role in supplying the domestic market of Turkmenistan with food products. In the context of regional tensions and possible disruptions in trade routes, such developments may lead to further price increases and potential shortages of certain goods. Residents report confusion and growing anxiety. Many hope the situation will be temporary and that prices will return to their previous levels within a few days. However, at this moment there have been no official explanations or public statements from the authorities. In this regard, the Human Rights Platform of the Civic Movement “DAYANÇ” / Turkmenistan considers it necessary to address several important questions to the authorities of Turkmenistan: What is the government’s plan of action in the face of a possible economic crisis? What concrete measures are being taken to stabilize food prices? Does the state have strategic food reserves, and will they be used to protect the population from rising prices? What steps are being taken to ensure uninterrupted supply of essential goods? We also believe that state institutions are obligated to inform citizens in a timely and transparent manner about economic developments, potential risks, and available measures to support the population. During periods of regional instability, transparency, accountability, and the willingness of authorities to engage in open dialogue with society are essential for maintaining public trust and social stability. The Human Rights Platform of the Civic Movement “DAYANÇ” / Turkmenistan calls on the authorities of the country to publicly clarify the current situation, present a clear anti-crisis plan, and ensure the protection of socially vulnerable groups from the consequences of rising prices. Citizens have the right to know what measures are being taken to protect their economic security and well-being.
