Radio Azatlyk — A Voice of Truth, Memory, and Resistance In the history of every nation, there are voices whose significance cannot be measured merely by ratings, circulation, views, or airtime. There are voices that become part of national memory. Part of resistance. Part of hope. Part of the struggle for dignity. For the Turkmen people, such a voice for more than seventy years has been Radio Azatlyk — the Turkmen Service of Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty. This publication is not tied to an anniversary, official date, or commemorative event. It is a sincere and deeply deserved expression of gratitude to those who, for decades, have carried out one of the most difficult and dangerous missions in the Turkmen information space: bringing the truth about Turkmenistan to the public despite censorship, repression, and information isolation. --- A History That Began in 1953 According to published historical materials, the Turkmen Service began broadcasting on March 1, 1953, from Munich. Initially, the station broadcast under the name “Azat Ediş,” and among those at the origins of the service were Aman Berdymyradov and Murat Tachmyradov. The editorial service later became part of Radio Free Europe / Radio Liberty (RFE/RL) — an international media organization working in countries where freedom of speech is restricted or suppressed. From small radio broadcasts, the Turkmen Service grew into a full multimedia platform that today includes: radio broadcasting; a news website; video reports; analytical materials; a YouTube channel; and social media publications. Even during the Soviet period, its staff and contributors were labeled: “enemies of the people”; “slanderers”; “provocateurs”; “agents of foreign influence.” Yet this aggressive reaction from authorities always confirmed one essential truth: > Authoritarian regimes do not fear empty words. They fear only the truth that people are able to hear. --- The People Who Became the Voice of Azatlyk The history of Radio Azatlyk is the history of individuals who built its reputation as a symbol of independent Turkmen journalism. Rozynazar Hudaýberdiýew One of the most recognizable voices of Azatlyk in previous decades. A philologist, broadcaster, and master of literary Turkmen language. Hudaýberdi Hallyýew A well-known presenter and journalist of the editorial team. Zarif Nazar A journalist of Radio Azatlyk who conducted interviews with prominent political figures, including Saparmurat Niyazov. Gözel Hudaýberdiýewa A long-serving editor and journalist of Radio Azatlyk who played an important role in shaping the outlet’s modern editorial policy and digital direction. --- Those Who Paid for the Truth with Their Freedom and Lives Working with Radio Azatlyk inside Turkmenistan has always involved enormous risk. According to human rights reports, signs of torture were found on her body. Hudaýberdi Allashov Former Radio Azatlyk correspondent subjected to arrests, torture, and persecution. Soltan Achilova Journalist and photojournalist repeatedly subjected to pressure, intimidation, and travel restrictions. Rovshen Yazmuhammedov Former freelance correspondent whose family was also subjected to pressure. --- Azatlyk as a Source of Truth for Human Rights Defenders For the human rights community, Radio Azatlyk has become one of the most important sources of reliable information about the real situation in Turkmenistan. Through Azatlyk’s reporting, the following are documented: human rights violations; forced deportations; transnational repression; political persecution; restrictions on freedom of movement; passport-related problems faced by citizens; pressure on activists, journalists, and their families; humanitarian and social crises inside the country. --- Gratitude from Human Rights and Democratic Structures Sincere appreciation to Radio Azatlyk is expressed by: Human Rights Platform of the Civil Movement “Dayanç” / Turkmenistan Chairperson — Diana Dadasheva Public-Political Organization DVT (France) Head — Murat Klychevich Kurbanov Coordinating Council of Democratic Forces of Turkmenistan Chairman — Muhammet Devejinijad Toronto, Canada Representatives of these organizations emphasize: > For many years, Radio Azatlyk’s materials have served as a vital source of information for documenting human rights violations, preparing international appeals, analytical reports, human rights statements, and public-political advocacy in defense of the rights of citizens of Turkmenistan. --- Azatlyk Is More Than News Radio Azatlyk is not merely a media outlet. It is: an archive of the historical memory of the Turkmen people; a guardian of free Turkmen speech; a bridge between the homeland and the diaspora; a witness to abuses the authorities seek to conceal; a tool for documenting the modern history of Turkmenistan. --- Thank You to Those Who Remain in the Shadows Special words of gratitude go to the many anonymous staff members, correspondents, informants, and sources working inside Turkmenistan. To those who: risk their freedom to transmit information; document ongoing events; report on abuses, repression, poverty, and corruption; help the world see the real picture.
