Limited Access to Modern Contraception in Turkmenistan

The Human Rights Platform of the Civic Movement DAYANÇ Turkmenistan expresses concern about the situation regarding women's access to modern family planning methods in Turkmenistan. According to international studies and reports published in foreign media, including an article by The Guardian, access to modern contraception in Turkmenistan remains limited, particularly in rural areas. According to available data, only about 40 percent of women of reproductive age use modern family planning methods. Limited access to medical information, insufficient availability of modern contraceptives, and the influence of patriarchal social norms create serious obstacles for women who wish to make independent decisions about family planning. International organizations, including the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), have repeatedly emphasized the importance of ensuring equal access to reproductive health services, medical information, and modern contraception. The Human Rights Platform of the Civic Movement DAYANÇ Turkmenistan believes that the right to health and the right to family planning are fundamental human rights. The state must ensure that women have free access to healthcare services, reliable information, and modern medical care regardless of their place of residence. We call on the authorities of Turkmenistan to: ensure the availability of modern contraceptive methods in all regions of the country; strengthen educational programs on reproductive health; improve healthcare infrastructure in rural areas; guarantee women the right to make independent decisions regarding family planning. The right of women to health, dignity, and informed choice must be respected and protected.
