The Human Rights Platform of the civil movement “Dayanch Turkmenistan” welcomes reports on the release of political prisoners in Bahrain as part of recently announced pardons. Following the release of political prisoners in Belarus, this step may appear as a positive signal for the international community and human rights organizations. The release of individuals deprived of their liberty for their beliefs, words, and civic stance is undoubtedly an event that deserves recognition and support. However, it is impossible not to note a troubling trend: in today’s world, fundamental human rights — such as freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and personal liberty — are increasingly becoming subjects of political bargaining. When a person’s freedom depends not on the law, but on political considerations, it sets a dangerous precedent. Such practices may serve as an example for other authoritarian regimes, showing that the detention of individuals can be used as a tool of pressure, negotiation, or image management. This, in turn, may lead to new waves of repression and even more serious human rights violations. Nevertheless, despite all the risks and concerns, it is impossible not to share the joy for those who have finally regained their freedom. Each released political prisoner is not just a personal victory, but a step toward justice, human dignity, and democracy. We express hope that this process will not be selective or temporary, but will become the beginning of systemic changes aimed at the full release of all political prisoners and respect for human rights in accordance with international standards. Freedom must not be granted — it must be guaranteed.
