A Year Without a Trace: 365 Days Without Answers — An International Action in Support of Disappeared Activists and Against Forced Deportations

April 28, 2026 marks exactly one year since the enforced disappearance of civil activists Alisher Sakhatov and Abdulla Orusov. They were taken from their home — a place where every person should feel safe. Since that day, their whereabouts remain unknown, and neither their families nor the public have received any official information. In response, the Human Rights Platform of the Civil Movement “Dayanç” (Turkmenistan) has announced an international action titled “A Year Without a Trace. 365 Days Without Answers.” The purpose of the action is to draw international attention to the fate of the disappeared activists, demand transparency and accountability, and prevent further cases of enforced disappearances and persecution of civil activists. Organizers call on people around the world to join the action: to hold pickets near diplomatic missions, offices of international organizations, and to record video messages with the main message of the campaign: “365 days without answers. Where are they?” At the same time, it is strongly emphasized: ❗ all actions must be conducted strictly in a peaceful manner, in full compliance with the law and the principles of non-violence. Every form of participation matters — whether it is an individual picket, a social media post, or a video statement. However, the issue does not end there. While demands for justice continue, new human rights violations are taking place. One of the most striking examples is the case of civil activist Maral, who, while trying to save her life and protect her children from violence, was forcibly deported without receiving proper protection. This case highlights a deeply concerning trend: transnational repression — including the persecution of activists abroad and forced deportations — is becoming increasingly widespread. Women and children in vulnerable situations are left without protection, while systems meant to ensure safety often fail to fulfill their role. In this regard, the Human Rights Platform “Dayanç” also calls for solidarity in support of Maral and her children, emphasizing that her story is not an isolated case, but a symbol of a systemic problem. The organizers of the action put forward the following demands: — to stop forced deportations — to protect women and children — to provide a legal assessment of such actions — to hold those responsible accountable Today, when silence can cost human lives, it is more important than ever to speak out, to act, and to demand justice. 365 days without answers. Where are they?
