A New Appointment, A New Responsibility: Will Dovletjan Yagshimuradov Become a Voice for Turkmen Athletes? The appointment of renowned Turkmen mixed martial arts fighter Dovletjan Yagshimuradov as a UN Friendship Games Goodwill Ambassador is a significant event. It recognizes his sporting achievements and contribution to the development of sport. We congratulate him on this prestigious appointment and wish him success in his new role. However, the title of Goodwill Ambassador is not merely an honor—it is also a great responsibility. It carries a commitment to uphold the core values of the United Nations: human dignity, justice, equality, integrity, and the protection of the rights of every individual without exception. For this reason, it is especially important that the new Goodwill Ambassador becomes not only a symbol of sporting excellence but also a genuine advocate for athletes who have faced injustice. One of the most tragic chapters in the history of Turkmen sport is the story of 14-year-old judoka Suleiman Tursunbaev. Suleiman was a talented young athlete who dreamed of bringing glory to Turkmenistan on the international stage. According to his parents, he often said that he wanted to become a world champion, raise the flag of his country, and one day shake hands with the President of Turkmenistan as a champion. According to reports by independent media, before the final match of a competition he was allegedly instructed to deliberately lose to a cadet of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The young athlete refused to compromise his principles, won the match fairly, and became the champion in his weight category. Shortly after the competition, Suleiman was reportedly abducted and brutally beaten by unknown individuals. Despite suffering severe injuries, he did not receive timely and adequate medical care and died several days later. His death shocked many people, while serious questions surrounding the circumstances of the tragedy and accountability for those responsible remain unresolved. If sport is truly meant to promote peace, friendship, and justice, such tragedies must never be ignored. We sincerely hope that Dovletjan Yagshimuradov will use his new international role to defend the interests and rights of athletes, regardless of their age, status, or public profile. We also hope that he will raise the case of Suleiman Tursunbaev and call for a fair, independent, and effective investigation to ensure that justice is served. It is equally important that he speaks out against intimidation, corruption, match-fixing, violence, and all other violations of athletes' rights. A true Goodwill Ambassador is not merely the public face of sport. It is someone who uses their influence to stand up for those whose voices cannot be heard. We wish Dovletjan Yagshimuradov every success in this important mission and hope that his work will be guided not by political propaganda but by the principles of honesty, humanity, justice, and respect for human dignity. Only by defending these values can he earn lasting respect not only as an outstanding athlete but also as a genuine advocate for the rights and dignity of athletes.
