Air Ambulance from Switzerland Lands in Ashgabat: Who Needed Emergency Help?

According to the independent publication Turkmen.news, a medical air ambulance from Zurich (Switzerland) has landed at Ashgabat International Airport. Such flights are typically used for urgent medical evacuation or for providing highly specialized medical assistance. However, in Turkmenistan events like this inevitably raise serious questions. In a country where ordinary citizens regularly face shortages of medicines, limited access to hospitals, a lack of medical specialists, and serious barriers to quality healthcare, the sudden arrival of an expensive international medical aircraft looks particularly symbolic. A natural question arises: Who exactly required urgent medical assistance from Switzerland? Unfortunately, ordinary citizens of Turkmenistan do not have access to such opportunities. For most people, even receiving basic medical treatment remains a serious challenge. Against this background, flights like this are increasingly perceived by society as another reminder of the deep inequality within the country’s healthcare system, where the best doctors in the world can be summoned for a select few, while others face shortages, queues, and silence. The Human Rights Platform of the Civic Movement “DAYANÇ” Turkmenistan believes it is important to emphasize that: A healthcare system must serve the entire population, not only a narrow circle of privileged individuals. Citizens have the right to know: what is happening in their country, who receives emergency international medical assistance and why, and why ordinary people are denied the opportunities that are available to elites. Transparency and equality are fundamental principles of a just society. We will continue to monitor this situation and call on the authorities of Turkmenistan to ensure transparency and respect citizens’ right to information.
