Iran’s Export Ban Could Trigger Food Supply Problems in Turkmenistan

The Human Rights Platform of the Civil Movement “DAYANÇ” Turkmenistan expresses concern about the potential social consequences of Iran’s decision to temporarily ban the export of food products, agricultural goods, and several other categories of commodities. According to media reports, the export ban came into force on March 3 and has been introduced for an indefinite period. The restrictions apply to a wide range of goods, including vegetables, potatoes, onions, food products, construction materials, and various household items. Iranian authorities explained that the measure was taken to ensure the country’s internal food security amid ongoing regional military and political tensions. However, this decision could be particularly sensitive for Turkmenistan. According to available data, a significant portion of food products exported from Iran traditionally goes to the Turkmen market. In some categories of goods, imports from Iran account for more than 80% of supplies. Experts warn that if the restrictions remain in place, the situation may have serious consequences for Turkmenistan’s domestic market. Possible outcomes include: a significant reduction in food supplies rising prices for vegetables and basic food products higher costs for construction materials increased pressure on an already fragile domestic market Analysts estimate that prices could increase by up to 100% for certain categories of goods, particularly those that were actively imported from Iran. The current situation once again highlights the vulnerability of Turkmenistan’s food supply system and its dependence on external imports. In conditions of economic opacity and limited transparency regarding state reserves, the population remains without clear information about what measures are being taken to prevent possible shortages. The Human Rights Platform “DAYANÇ” Turkmenistan believes that these risks directly affect the social and economic rights of citizens, including the right to an adequate standard of living and access to food. We call on the authorities of Turkmenistan to: ensure transparency regarding the country’s food reserves take measures to stabilize prices on the domestic market guarantee access to essential food products for the population consider alternative supply channels in order to prevent shortages In conditions of economic hardship and strong dependence on imports, any disruption in supply chains may have serious social consequences for millions of citizens of Turkmenistan. Access to food is one of the fundamental human rights, and the state must take all possible measures to protect it. Source: Turan News
